PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Queens Market Lighting Project involved a phased modernisation of the market’s electrical and lighting systems, delivered while maintaining the day-to-day operation of the market.


Commissioned by the London Borough of Newham, the works included temporary lighting, LED replacement, electrical plant-room upgrades, lighting controls, shop-front rewiring, canopy lighting and illuminated signage.

THE CHALLENGE

A key requirement was to complete extensive electrical and lighting upgrades without disrupting the daily operation of the market. This required careful sequencing, temporary lighting and overnight working to maintain safe and continuous use of the site.

THE WORKS

PHASE 01

Temporary lighting was installed overnight to avoid disruption to normal market operations.

PHASE 02

Existing lighting was replaced with energy-efficient LED systems in phased 10-metre sections, allowing the market to remain operational.

PHASE 03

The East electrical plant room was upgraded with new switchgear, surge protection and smart dimmable lighting controls.

PHASE 04

Shop-front lighting was rewired and coordinated with the wider lighting replacement programme.

PHASE 05

The front canopies were upgraded with integrated LED lighting, a new control system and illuminated signage.

PROJECT OUTCOME

The completed works improved the reliability, controllability and energy efficiency of the market’s lighting and electrical infrastructure while allowing the site to remain operational throughout the project.
