PROJECT OVERVIEW
Beneath the streets of central London is an extensive network of service tunnels carrying critical infrastructure including gas mains, HV and LV electrical supplies and fibre-optic cabling.
L&K was engaged by the City of London Corporation to install new functional and emergency lighting within the tunnels, improving visibility and providing a safer working environment for those maintaining the infrastructure.

THE CHALLENGE
The tunnel environment presented a number of practical challenges, including restricted working conditions, poor existing lighting and the requirement for operatives to work while carrying emergency escape breathing apparatus.
The first tunnel covered by the project extends for more than 2,600 metres, requiring the lighting works to be carefully sequenced while maintaining suitable temporary illumination throughout the installation.
THE WORKS
L&K began by completely removing the existing lighting circuits within the tunnel.
More than 2,000 metres of 110V temporary lighting was then installed to provide suitable illumination while the permanent installation was replaced.
The works then progressed to the installation of new functional and emergency lighting equipment throughout the tunnel environment.
